New Mexico UST/AST Class A/B Operator Training
The New Mexico Environment Department’s Petroleum Storage Tank Bureau regulates aboveground and underground petroleum storage tank systems under 20.5 NMAC. For official operator-training information, visit the Petroleum Storage Tank Bureau website (https://www.env.nm.gov/petroleum_storage_tank/tank-system-testing-and-reporting-requirements/).
Why This Training Matters
New Mexico requires each regulated storage tank system or group of systems to have designated Class A and Class B operators who complete department-approved training applicable to both UST and AST systems. New Class A and Class B operators must be trained and certified within 60 days of assuming full operation and maintenance responsibilities.
This training helps operators:
• Understand their responsibilities under New Mexico’s petroleum storage tank regulations
• Maintain regulatory compliance and required documentation
• Recognize and respond to release-detection and release-prevention issues
• Perform required monthly facility inspections
• Protect public health, property, and New Mexico’s groundwater resources
Class A and Class B operators must be recertified every five years. If the Petroleum Storage Tank Bureau finds a storage tank system out of compliance with specified release-detection or release-prevention requirements, its Class A and Class B operators generally must complete approved retraining within 60 days.
